Thoughts on... charity

Around Christmas time everybody tries to raise money for almost everything. People make us feel bad by showing how poor people are elsewhere in the world and make us think we should stop spending tons of money on Christmas presents and give bit of money to the people that won't even have something to eat on Christmas Eve.

Let me put this straight, I really like the thought of helping others. I'm a nurse and that's kind of my job! But there are othere thoughts as well. I don't think we should give things to others only because it's Christmas. It has lost most of its meaning anyway. So why don't we raise some money during summer instead of going on a three week five star luxury cruise or something like that. Pack your stuff into your car, go camping with your friends for a week and give the rest of the money to the nursery home around the corner. Or the youth center. Or something else close to you. I mean, I totally get that there are poor people all around the world but there are also hungry children in your town or old people who don't get any Christmas presents. Why don't you think of those ones first? I found this Christmas tree in a shopping centre close to where I live where people who live in a nursing home or in a home for handicapped young adults can hang little cards with their wishes and whoever comes there can take one of these cards and give a present to one of those people. Some of them need more expensive stuff as they can't afford it but most of them appreciate very simple things. A bottle of body lotion, a blanket or some sweets. And as I don't have money lying around to give to charity I decided to make one of those wishes come true.

Also I heard about lots of other things that can be done in Cologne and I really think if you want to help someone just look around, maybe your neighbour who cannot walk the stairs properly would be happy if you helped them by doing their shopping every once in a while. Or that young single parent who never gets to have some quiet time, offer to babysit! There is so much you can do and you don't need a lot of money for that!

An Weihnachten versuchen ja alle, irgendwie Geld für Hilfsorganisationen zu sammeln, indem sie uns das Gefühl geben, dass es falsch ist, einen Haufen Geld für Weihnachtsgeschenke auszugeben, wenn anderswo auf der Welt noch nichtmal etwas zu Essen haben am Heiligen Abend.

Um das klarzustellen, ich finde es super, anderen zu helfen aber es gibt ein paar Dinge, die mich stören. Ich finde, dass man nicht nur an Weihnachten anderen helfen sollte, es hat ja sowieso einiges seiner ursprünglichen Bedeutung verloren. Also, warum nicht auf die dreiwöchige Luxuskreuzfahrt im Sommer verzichten oder so? Man kann auch seine Sachen und Freunde einpacken und eine Woche zelten gehen, das gesparte Geld ist sicher im benachbarten Seniorenheim oder Jugendzentrum gut aufgehoben. Oder anderswo in der Nähe. Natürlich gibt es woanders sehr, sehr arme Menschen aber die gibt es auch in eurer Stadt. Kinder, die nichts zu essen haben oder alte Leute, die nichts zu Weihnachten bekommen. Warum also nicht zuerst an die denken? Bei uns im Einkaufszentrum gab es vor Kurzem einen Weihnachtsbaum, an dem die Wünsche hingen von Bewohnern eines Seniorenheims und eines Behindertenheim. Wer wollte, konnte sich so eine Karte mitnehmen und jemandem einen Wunsch erfüllen. Einige brauchen etwas kostspieligere Sachen aber die meisten sind sehr zufrieden mit Kleinigkeiten, eine Bodylotion, eine neue Decke oder ein paar Süßigkeiten und da ich nicht so viel Geld zum Spenden übrig habe, habe ich beschlossen, einen dieser Wünsche zu erfüllen.

Es gibt noch ganz viele andere Aktionen hier in Köln und wenn ihr wirklich jemandem helfen wollt, dann schaut doch mal bei eurem Nachbarn vorbei. Vielleicht kann jemand nicht mehr so gut Treppen steigen und freut sich, wenn ihr ab und zu für ihn einkauft. Oder die allein erziehende Mutter, die nie Zeit für sich hat, bietet ihr doch an, einmal als Babysitter auszuhelfen! Es gibt so vieles, was man machen kann, ohne Geld dafür auszugeben.

Habt ihr in letzter Zeit etwas für andere getan? Seid euch sicher, dass die Leute sich darüber freuen und vielleicht wollt ihr ja sogar etwas davon erzählen?!
